We invite you to contribute to the efsli General Assembly and efsli Conference in Berlin 2027 by applying as an interpreter.

This is an opportunity to support communication and collaboration with colleagues from across Europe. We welcome applications from deaf and hearing interpreters with relevant skills and experience.

Call for Interpreters

For the efsli General Assembly on 16 April 2027 and the efsli Conference on 17–18 April 2027, we are looking for interpreters working between German Sign Language (DGS) and German, and between International Sign (IS) and English.

You can apply individually or as a team of up to four (4) interpreters, deaf or hearing. Please read the full criteria below before applying.

German Sign Language interpreters

For the conference on 17–18 April 2027, we are looking for four (4) Sign Language interpreters to work between German and German Sign Language (DGS). Interpreters will receive a fee of €1,560 plus VAT, if applicable, for 1.5 days of interpreting. Hotel accommodation (two nights for interpreters residing outside Berlin) and meals will be covered by the organisers.

Prerequisites: Excellent command of German and German Sign Language, extensive experience in conference interpreting, and either membership in a German professional association for Sign Language interpreters or a recognised qualification as a German Sign Language interpreter.

International Sign interpreters

We are also looking for four experienced interpreters to work between English and International Sign at the AGM on 16 April and the Conference on 17–18 April 2027. Interpreters will receive a fee of €2,600 plus VAT, if applicable, for 2.5 days of interpreting. Hotel accommodation (three nights) and meals will be covered by the organisers.

Prerequisites: Relevant training and/or experience in international conference interpreting. It would be desirable that the applicants are WFD-WASLI accredited or pre-accredited.

Participation in the DMIT Research Study

Although the interpreting positions are paid by DMIT (Deaf Mediators, Interpreters and Translators) research project, and efsli through different funding arrangements, participation in the DMIT research study forms an integral part of every interpreting assignment advertised in this call. Applicants should therefore indicate in their application whether they are willing to participate in the study.

Submitting an application or indicating willingness to participate does not constitute informed consent. Applicants who are selected for an interpreting position will receive comprehensive participant information and a separate informed consent form before their appointment is confirmed. Participation in the research will only take place after written informed consent has been provided.

The DMIT project is a multinational research collaboration involving the University of Wolverhampton, the Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Ethical approval has been granted by the KBSF Ethics Committee at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Reference: HU-KSBF-EK_2024_0034).

What data will be collected?

Selected portions of their interpreting work will be video recorded, their eye movements will be recorded using mobile eye-tracking glasses, and relevant metadata will be collected. The study examines interpreting processes and the resulting interpreted products, as well as how these products are perceived by sign language users.
